Welcome to South America Day
Carousel of tasks on offer:
Year 6 Identifying Trees Children took leaves form the school grounds and had to create keys to help identify the leaves from the trees. They had to ask sensible, scientific questions based on the features of the leaves, for example: Is the leaf at least twice as long it is wide? Do the leaves grow in opposite pairs? Does the edge of the leaf have large teeth? By answering yes and no, they came to name the tree. Calculating the area of the canopy provided by our Maple tree Year 6 identified the eight compass points around the tree trunk. They measured the distance from the trunk to each point. In class, they plotted the compass points on a grid with four quadrants and then calculated the area of the canopy. The scale was made easy as one square represented one square metre. Year 6 offered each other a wealth of knowledge in the form of their chosen mathematician or scientist. In their presentations, we learned about the challenges and achievements of key people in this field. We listened to articulate, confident and informative presentations which included the following people: Ada Lovelace, Katherine Johnson, Annie Easley, Marie Curie, Sarah Gilbert, Nikola Tesla, Zu Chongzhi, Liu Hui, Terence Tao, Albert Einstein and Ernest Walton. Year 6 went on a 3D shape hunt in the playground and took the measurements of height, depth and length of the objects they found. They came back into class to identify and draw their 3D shapes to scale and calculate the volume. The children challenged themselves to go further by identifying the volume of a cylinder… V=πr2h |
