Year 6 had great fun making advent wreaths from the plants and shrubs found on the school grounds. They were given very few instructions and got in touch with their natural side as they moulded and cajoled the materials for their festive creation. Several members of staff commented that they were worthy of selling at our local market in Spitalfields. Year 6 could not wait to take these homes and display on their doors and walls!
This was an opportunity to dress up. However, this was no ordinary day at school. Instead, Year 6 was plunged into darkness with a virtual black-out of all classroom colour and resources. Even signs of all modern technology were shrouded in an attempt to create the atmosphere of a Victorian School. Children were met with harsh discipline from all staff and were expected to maintain their gaze to the ground at all times and keep their hands stretched out on the desk where ‘the devil could do no harm’. The dunces hat caused humiliation and a lot of giggles too. Lessons consisted of reciting the three R’s and famous Victorian proverbs.
