Crowning of Mary

Pupils celebrated the crowning of Mary at assembly today. Parents and pupils donated flowers for the May Altar for Our Lady which is our prayer focus this month and are invited to send flowers to honour Mary and to pray at Our Lady’s altar in the hall each day.

Easter at English Martyrs School

Year 5 presented a very moving Easter Meditation in school yesterday, they all played their parts well. The Choir and KS2 pupils supported and sang beautifully and were a credit to our school.  The event was attended by Parents, Fr Ray & Sr Nazir.

Year 6 Worship in our prayer garden

Year 6 prayed for world peace.  We filled our prayer garden with the sound of song which combined beautifully with the birdsong.  Here, we were able to appreciate the peace and tranquillity we continue to enjoy while a war rages on near our lands.  We took the time to appreciate our beautiful surroundings observing the signs of God and our blessings all around us.  Personal intentions were made.  Our mission – to pray more frequently in the days which lie ahead.

“He whom is without sin......"

Year 5 re-enacted the occasion when Jesus said, “He whom is without sin, cast the first stone…”

In our assembly, we learned about second chances and fresh starts.  God is always ready to help us start afresh.

Christmas at English Martyrs School
The children really enjoyed sharing their Advent and Nativity assemblies with the parents. Thank you to the Year 5 and 6 parents who attended the Carol Service in Church on Friday, your presence and your children’s participation really made everyone’s evening. Well done and thank you. 'Feliz Navidad’!!)

“May all your little stars shine bright!” Well done all!

Remembrance Service performed by Year 5
Year 5 delivered a beautiful Remembrance service in school today.  They acted, narrated, read poems, played in the orchestra and sang with great respect and dignity.  Mrs Moore was very proud of them and the message of Remembrance (part of their World War 1 topic) was shared in a meaningful way with the rest of the school and parents.
Each class had prepared a beautiful poppy wreath which they laid at our Remembrance altar.

Here are two poems written by Year 5 pupils.

Red Carpet

I have second thoughts
I gaze upon my enemies
Trembling
I climb up the deadly steps
A ladder to the heavens
I’m crossing my fingers hoping I won’t die
Blood-red poppies in my way
Puddles of blood pulling me back
Mud in my face
There is pain in my stomach
Life seeping out
Death comes upon me
Looming over me like an eagle eyeing its prey
THUD!!
I hit the ground
A carpet of dead bodies is all I could see
I gaze upon the battlefield
And that was my last sight.

Today is the day

Today is the day,
Where the mud will stick to my feet,
Although I will not accept defeat,
My friends die by the minute,
By a diabolical sniper,
What will I do?

The Hun are coming towards me,
My pulse racing,
My gasping breath,
I cannot control,
Am Re-loading,
But…
Am I alive?

Boom
A bullet hits me,
The machine guns laughing,
Our numbers shrinking,
Will this ever end?
So grotesque,
I wonder what it’s like to die,
Is it a relief?
Or full of grief?

The blood is nourishing,
The ruby-red poppies,
So remorseful, And monstrous,
The gas is drifting towards me,
Me getting shell-shock,
Trench-foot too,
The next corpse to be will probably be me.

Advent at English Martyrs School
Light the advent candle one now the waiting has begun!!  At assembly on Friday Miss Nugent discussed the meaning of Advent with the whole school in preparation for the Advent season which starts on Sunday 1st December.

As part of our preparation during Advent some classes are using a Giving Advent Calendar this year.  We would be grateful if you could help with a donation of some of the foods and products asked for on the calendar.  The products collected will be given to the local foodbank.

Year 6 Harvest Assembly

Year 6 proudly and loudly presented a poignant message for Harvest this year.  They reflected upon the damage humans are causing to the planet and the constant bad news in the media about the future, if we do not amend our patterns of behaviour and reverse the effects of climate change.

The solution offered to parents and children was found in the Bible: The Word.  In the Parable of the Sower, we learn that if we embrace Christian values and beliefs, we can create the Kingdom of God on Earth.

“An inspirational assembly, it has inspired me to follow God’s will and look after our planet. “
“The Harvest Assembly was a great lesson for us and our parents, our points about taking care of the planet definitely came through, we were all inspired to be stewards of the Earth.”

Easter in English Martyrs School

Spring bursts into the air with meditation, colours and creativity!

Pupils performed their Easter meditation which reminded us of the journey Jesus took through the stations of the cross on Calvary.

Pupils designed beautiful artwork depicting Jesus' passion and death.
