RECEPTION
Reception Teacher - Ms Cutts
Support Staff – Mrs Nelson
Settling in
New parents are invited to help their child settle in his/her first day in Reception. After that, you may wait in the Foundation Stage playground from 8.50 and play with the activities until the bell is rung at 9a.m. It is important that the children learn to look after our resources and we ask that you make sure that children and their smaller siblings are careful.
Reading books
We use a range of reading schemes including The Oxford Reading Tree, and PM Starters among others. Children will read individually on average twice each week, in addition to shared and guided reading sessions in a larger group. Reception children have a Reading Record book in which parents are encouraged to comment as they read with their child.
Clothing
Reception children wear a white polo shirt, navy sweatshirt, elasticated trousers and black ‘school’ shoes. Shoes should be suitable for physical activity and Velcro is a particularly practical fastening.
The summer uniform for boys and girls consists of navy shorts with a white polo shirt. Shoes suitable for summer should be worn with socks (no open toed sandals or flip flops). Please label all your child’s belongings.
Reception children need a PE kit of white round-necked T-shirt and navy shorts. A school PE bag is available to buy from the office (£3). Reception children have PE every Wednesday and Thursday.
Sand, soil and water activities, both indoor and outdoor, are an integral part of the Foundation Stage curriculum. We request that you leave a spare set of clothing, including underwear, in school.
Children have continued access to the outside area throughout the day and are encouraged to play in most reasonable weather condition. Please ensure your child has warm outdoor clothes during the winter months.
Please apply total sun block on your child and provide them with a sun hat during the summer.
Medication
We have followed the guidelines of ‘DFES Managing medicines in Schools and Early Years Settings’ - March 2005 and ‘Tower Hamlets Meeting Medical Needs’ - February 2005 and we acknowledge: ‘Children should not be refused admission, excluded, denied access to curriculum entitlements…because of their medical condition.’ Any condition that requires medication must be discussed with Foundation Stage teachers. However, new guidelines also advise that children who have suffered from sickness or diarrhoea should return to school no sooner than 48 hours after their final upset.
Curriculum
We use the EYFS curriculum to plan as a team for both Nursery and Reception.
There are 3 prime areas:
The children learn through self initiated play and adult led activities. The Characteristics of Effective Learning underpin all areas of learning - playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. We endeavour to provide a rich and varied curriculum which enables children to make a happy and confident start in primary education.
We use DFE Letters and Sounds to teach phonics from the beginning of the Early Years in Nursery, to the end of Year 2.
You may find this link useful to know the order in which phonics is taught. We are always happy to answer any questions.
