On Wednesday 9th November the children became scientists during our visit to the Soanes Centre in Mile End. They identified different rocks around the woodland park. They discussed the properties of different rocks and used the scientific language that they learned during our Rocks and Soils science topic work. they conducted two experiments and shared resources and listened well to each other. They were engaged, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable! Their behaviour was impeccable during the visit and on public transport. Well done Year 3!
The children worked in groups to research the life and work of palaeontologist Mary Anning, who was later to be known as the greatest fossil collector ever known. Her work is displayed in museums around the world. They listened to each other and made notes about her accomplishments and later they will then write a biography about Mary Anning. A palaeontologist is a scientist who studies the history of life on Earth through the fossil record. In our Science lesson the children were carrying out various tests in order to find out the properties of a variety of rocks. This test, using a pipette and water, will test whether a rock is permeable (allows water to pass through it) or impermeable (does not allow water to pass through it). Some children used non-fiction books to research the properties of their rocks. This test will let the children know how durable (hard wearing) their rock is as they scratch the surface of the rock with a dull pencil. The children had to immerse their rock slowly in the water to test if their rock is high density (sinks) or low density (floats). As part of our Stones and Bones topic, for homework, the children had to design and make made stone age artefacts using mostly recycled items. They made stone age shelters, stone age tools and stone age jewellery! Well done Year 3, you are talented craftspeople! As part of our RE topic, The Christian Family, we invited one of our parents into school to discuss the baptism of their child. The children listened carefully to the events in a baptism. They handled the different objects linked to a baptism with care and they asked sensible questions, including a very thoughtful question from one of our newly elected Y3 School Councillors:
What do you have to do at church before you get your baby baptised? Many thanks to the parent who brought in precious baptism items, prepared excellent questions for the children and lovely, special family photographs of their child's baptism. Year 3 enjoyed the school grounds and made close observation of our flowers. They identified the male and female parts of a flower and then constructed their own in art and D.T
This week we celebrated Science and Maths Week. Most of the learning took place outdoors in our school grounds. The objectives for this was to continue with our creative curriculum as well as encourage a love for science and maths. The whole school dressed up as their favourite Scientist or Mathematician where year 3 had some very imaginative costumes.
Year 3 were investigating the air resistance of different shapes of parachute. Using stopwatches, they measured the amount of time it would take for their parachute to reach the floor. In English the children researched a prominent scientist that contributed to the area of Science that we are studying. They highlighted the features of a biography and then wrote their own detailed biography.
