Using the stained-glass windows in church as inspiration, the children decorated an image linked to Pentecost. They carefully considered the colours that would be suitable and developed their cutting skills to produce their own Pentecost stained glass window pane. The children read the scripture of the road to Emmaus as a class. they then acted out the events in the scripture in small groups. They answered some questions about how they thought the apostles would feel about meeting Jesus for the first time after his death on the cross. They also thought about the many lessons that we could learn from that story that we could use in our everyday lives. The children made a big splash this week as they swam for the first time in Year 3. They excitedly entered school with their full swimming kits and bags of energy! They behaved well on the DLR and changed quickly into their swimming kits. They listened to the swim teachers and were happy but tired after the hour-long lesson. Well done Year 3! Swimming is an excellent way to exercise and going swimming with your class encourages rapid acquisition of the techniques and strategies as you work with your friends and highly skilled swim teachers. Swimming is also an invaluable life skill that the children can build upon as they grow.
The children learned about how the Egyptians used hieroglyphics as a form of communication and writing. They practised writing their names in hieroglyphics on paper and later made a name plate using clay and carefully etched their name into the clay before it dried. After they allowed it to dry, they then painted a base colour on their name plate. Later they used a fine tipped paint brush to paint their name in colours that would have been popular in Ancient Egyptian times. The children researched their chosen Ancient Egyptian God and wrote a paragraph of their findings. They were amazed at the number of Gods that the Ancient Egyptians worshipped and enjoyed learning about each of their different areas of responsibility in the world. They enjoyed learning about the famous story of the Goddess Isis’ tears causing the River Nile to flood. The children in year 3 dramatized the story: Jesus heals Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52) after they participated in godly play. They answered a number of I winder questions as they considered the followers of Jesus’ thoughts and feelings about the events that happened on the dusty road between Jesus and Bartimaeus. They went on to think about the people in their lives who are in need and how they can respond to them. We discussed the ways in which they act that are similar to the people in the story of the Healing of Blind Bartimaeus and they also thought about what they could do to show love and forgiveness as a way of being like Jesus, linking that action to a message in a parable that they have learned about in Year 3. This half term the children are learning about Friction. They have been using friction daily to keep their hands warm after playtime. In our lesson, they discovered how to use a Newton meter to measure forces in Newtons (N). They worked well with their partner and recorded their results in a table. To continue our celebration of World Book Day 2023, key stage 2 had the honour of an in person visit from the Author Laura Mucha. The children’s poet engaged the children with her electric energy, enthusiasm and charm. She explained her writing process, read the children some of her hugely entertaining non-fiction poems and led a poetry writing workshop to showcase the dreaded editing process when writing. The children thoroughly enjoyed her re-enactment of how honey bees protect themselves against hornets and were thrilled with her research into her poem about the King Cobra snake. A big thank you to Laura Mucha for her verve for writing poetry, sharing that experience with the children and leading an engaging workshop. The children have been thinking about what they planned to give up to mark the important time in the church calendar – Lent. We enjoyed a lively discussion about the significance of Lent and how we can draw closer to God through prayer, almsgiving and fasting. The children then shared what they were going to give up this year as some of the class will be preparing for their first Holy Communion. They then wrote their Lenten promises on a stone to remind us of the path that we have chosen to take to Calvary.
The children celebrated World Book Day on 2nd March with the rest of the school and made an outstanding effort to dress up as characters from their favourite stories. They impressed the adults by being able to say why they chose their character! Our fun day ended with a lovely visit to Waterstones book store in Leadenhall Market where the children exchanged their World Book Day token for a special edition World Book Day book.
If you haven’t redeemed your voucher for a special edition book, you have until Sunday 26th March 2023. |
