The children created equal groups of 2, 5 and 10. They were required to represent the groups using pictures, repeated addition and describe the groups using stem sentences. Our topic this term is ‘Houses and Homes’. We started the term with the book Little Red Riding Hood and we wrote descriptions on the setting of the story. This week, we painted in the style of Paul Hortan. Take a look at our terraced houses. After investigating what hand and finger puppets are and how they work, the children designed their own hand puppet and described how it works. They then used a pre-cut template of fabric for the base of their puppet. They then joined the fabric together using simple stitches. Then they cut simple shapes from fabric and joined them to their puppet using glue and staples. Our RE topic this term is Mary our Mother and Advent.
The children retold the story of the Visitation and wrote an Advent promise in preparation for Christmas. Year 1 have been working very hard with their writing about our class book Traction Man. They have written their favourite part of the story and have written amazing character descriptions.
Well done Year 1! The children worked in groups to sequence one of the missions discussed in our class book Traction Man. Working as a group, they sequenced the images into chronological order of the mission taking place. This session allowed the children to orally rehearse using the past tense. They were encouraged to use the following Adverbial phrases: unfortunately luckily suddenly just then just in time early one morning late one evening one afternoon out in the garden The children answered the big question ‘What materials are waterproof?’. They investigated which materials would be best for Traction Man when he is exploring the bath. First, they predicted which material would be the most waterproof. In small groups they used a pipette filled with water and observed which materials absorbed the water and when the water sat on top of the material (waterproof).
The children participated in Godly Play and listened to the story of the Visitation. We responded to the following ‘I wonder’ statements:
In Year 1 we love reading for pleasure. The book we will be reading and learning this half term is ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey. Perhaps, you can read some other books by the author Mini Grey with your child.
