Mathematics

Mrs Pasha– Maths Subject Leader

Pupils are taught a range of strategies for mental and written calculations to enable them to become numerate. Parents are invited to attend Numeracy workshops and are provided with materials and guidance to support their children’s learning. We consistently achieve above the national average in our mathematics results. Our school invests in the online resources 'Mathletics' which is a fun and interactive site designed to enjoy and encourage progress in maths.

Intent

At English Martyrs, our primary aim is to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics as an interesting and valuable subject.  In lessons, we will make links to daily life to ensure our children have the skills and competency to apply their knowledge in real settings.
The language of mathematics is universal.  The basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children. Our aim is for all children to think mathematically, enabling them to make accurate calculations, reason and solve problems in order to feel confident in the decisions they will make later on in life.
Our Mathematics Mastery curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve excellence in mathematics. Children can experience a sense of curiosity and wonder as they: solve a problem for the first time, discover different solutions and make links between different areas of mathematics. It provides pupils with a deep understanding of the subject through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. This ensures pupils fully understand what they are learning by applying a range of learning strategies: working both cooperatively, collaboratively and independently.  This will ensure confidence in mathematics where children can express ideas fluently and talk about the subject using mathematical vocabulary.

Implementation

  1. All children should become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice.  We aim to foster a positive attitude and fascination and excitement of discovery through the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts. We want our children to develop a ‘can do’ attitude and perceive themselves as mathematicians.
  2. Children develop their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall facts and apply that knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  3. Children will be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language which will promote critical thinking.
  4. Children will be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a range of problems. They will be able to break them down into smaller steps and persevere when seeking solutions.
  5. We use the White Rose Mastery curriculum. The emphasis is on depth and challenge rather than accelerating through the content.
  6. Children who grasp concepts quickly will be challenged through new, increasingly sophisticated problems.
  7. We will broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in the wider world.
  8.  Our children will use and understand mathematical vocabulary and recognise its importance as a language for communication and thinking.
  9. Children will calculate with confidence using the White Rose calculation methods.
  10. Our curriculum places emphasis on the cumulative mastery of essential knowledge and skills in mathematics. It embeds a deeper understanding of maths by utilising a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so that pupils understand what they are doing rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening.
