Illuminated by Christ, we radiate His love
At English Martyrs Catholic Primary School, our mission is to ensure every child is ‘Illuminated by Christ’ so that they may ‘radiate His love’ in all they do.
We recognise that some of our pupils radiate this love in a very special way by being Young Carers. These children provide essential care and support for one or more family members at home.
Being a Young Carer at English Martyrs
A young carer is a person under 18 who helps look after someone in their family who has a disability, a long-term illness, a mental health condition, or a drug or alcohol problem.

Our Commitment to Support
Because we believe every child should be supported to "radiate His love" without being overwhelmed, we offer a nurturing environment that protects Young Carers well-being and education.
If you believe your child has caring responsibilities at home, please speak to Mr Devereux, Mrs Moore or Mrs McInroy.
We want to work with you to ensure your child shines brightly in our school family.
If you feel anxious, uncomfortable or worried about speaking to a member of staff face-to-face about such a sensitive issue, you can email inf confidence to: [email protected].

In our primary school, this often means a child is:
- Radiating Kindness: Providing emotional support or "keeping an eye" on a loved one to make sure they are safe.
- Following Christ’s Example of Service: Helping with small practical tasks like tidying, fetching medicines, or helping a sibling get ready for school.

- A Sanctuary of Support: We provide a calm, welcoming atmosphere where young carers are known by name and their unique responsibilities are respected and kept confidential.
- Flexibility and Care: We offer extra help with homework or flexible deadlines, and ensure children can contact home during breaks if they are feeling anxious.
- Community Links: We work closely with the Tower Hamlets Young Carers Project to provide our pupils with opportunities for respite and fun with other children in similar situations.
