Our topic this half term was ‘Let’s Get Moving’. To finish the half term we designed, made and evaluated vehicles. The children had the brief to make a vehicle that moved out of boxes. They had to think about what the body of their vehicle looked like and how they could replicate these using boxes. We looked at axles, wheels and chassis and how they worked. We also experimented with how we can join materials together using cellotape, masking tape, glue and split pins. During PE this half term we have been learning gymnastics. We have leant how to balance on the beam, jump off a horse and land correctly with our knees bent. We also learnt how to use the climbing frame safely. In Year 2 we have started our new book in English ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ by Gareth Edwards and Hannah Shaw. We began by making our own disgusting sandwich. We collected ingredients from the playground the more disgusting the better. Then we made our sandwich and thought about how we could describe our ingredients using two adjectives. We even invited Miss Nugent to come and try our sandwiches for her lunch! Have a look and see if you would try our disgusting sandwiches! In Science we worked in small groups to complete an animal and their young matching card activity-matching the baby animals with their parents. We then labelled the animals and their babies with their names. Come and ask Year 2 what a baby snake, deer and goat is called. During our computer lesson this week, we used the program ‘Air Traffic Controller’ on Purple Mash to create our own airport and then use simple coding to make the plane move. During Religion this week we have looked at the First Disciples. We used Godly play to retell the story, sang the chorus to the Hymn ‘Follow Me’ during our collective worship and painted. We took our inspiration for painting from Raphael’s painting ‘The Miraculous Draught of Fishers’. We carried out the following experiment, to investigate why we need to wash our hands with soap. The children predicted what would happen when we dipped our finger in without soap and then with soap. They were amazed at what they found out. During our maths lessons this week we are learning about division. At the beginning of the week we used counters, cubes and our whiteboards to learn how to share into equal groups. We had to read the task card and then share the objects into what the task card asked. We know that equal groups mean that each group has the same amount in. After watching a video on how to use the lines and where to position the drawing on the paper, we sketched our favourite vehicle. We then used watercolours to add colour and control how light and dark the colour is. During History this week we compared trains from Victorian times to modern day trains. The children looked at books, videos and pictures of trains from the Victorian and discussed all the things that they found that we don’t see on modern day trains. They decided if they would like to travel by a train in the Victorian times or a train today. |
