Illuminated by Christ, we radiate His love
At English Martyrs, our newsletters are more than just updates – they are one of the main ways we show how we care for children’s personal development, wellbeing and spiritual life.
Personal development and wellbeing
Through our newsletters we aim to show parents how children are growing as people, not just as learners. You will often see:
Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC)
As a Catholic school, our newsletters also reflect how we are helping children to grow spiritually and morally, and to understand the wider world. You will notice:

Personal development and wellbeing
Through our newsletters we aim to show parents how children are growing as people, not just as learners. You will often see:
- Stories and photos celebrating pupils’ achievements, responsibilities and acts of kindness, showing how they are learning confidence, resilience and service to others.
- Information about clubs, trips, sporting events and extra‑curricular activities that help children discover their interests and develop healthy lifestyles.
- Messages about behaviour, anti‑bullying work, online safety, attendance and routines, so that school and home can work together to keep children safe, happy and ready to learn.
Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC)
As a Catholic school, our newsletters also reflect how we are helping children to grow spiritually and morally, and to understand the wider world. You will notice:
- Reports of Masses, liturgies, feast days and charitable activities, which encourage children to reflect, pray and think about the needs of others.
- Items about class learning in RE and PSHE/RSE, and about the values we focus on (such as respect, forgiveness, honesty and responsibility).
- News from cultural celebrations, curriculum themes and visits that help children learn about different peoples, cultures and beliefs, while holding firm to our Catholic identity.
How parents can use the newsletters
- Read them regularly with your child and pick out one or two items to talk about each week.
- Notice where your child is taking part in opportunities for leadership, service or worship and praise them for this.
- Use the information about behaviour, safety and wellbeing to reinforce the same messages and expectations at home.
