Reception class have been learning about food and cooking. We explored what life was like over 100 years ago and discussed how people might have cooked their food before we had electric kitchen appliances. We were lucky to have actual Victorian artefacts to handle and play with in our role play area, including a washboard and a copper kettle. We were very careful not to damage them. The Reception Class were learning about reactions and mixtures this week. We poured oil, colour and glitter into water to make mood shakers and observe the process of mixing or separating. We discovered that although food colour dissolves in water, oil floats to the top! We also observed the reaction of mento sweets in a bottle of coca cola. Try this at home and see what happens… We used pipettes to drop vinegar onto bicarbonate of soda. Ariel said it made bubbles. Jordan said it made “popping sounds.” Constance said she enjoyed making her mood shaker and likes it a lot! We have had another busy week in Reception. Our new story is “The Elves and the Shoemaker” and the children loved making puppets and masks of the characters and incorporating them into their own imaginative play. Our Maths focus has been shapes and we have been learning to fit 2D shapes together to create patterns. We even made a patchwork blanket using different coloured squares cut from fabric! As we are in the month of May, we took part in the school’s crowning of Mary assembly and we made our own paper flowers for our prayer table by drawing around 2D and 3D shapes on tissue paper and adding stems. Who knew that we could combine Maths and RE in one activity!? Our First Week Back – Summer Term 2021 This week we are learning about traditional stories and our focus text is “Little Red Riding Hood.” We loved making masks and using our new finger puppets to retell and role play this story. We also discussed how traditional tales are different from other stories and how they are very old and our parents and grandparents learned them when they were little! We were so inspired by our favourite stories that some children even had a go at writing their own stories. They were all amazing. We are learning to count to 20 and beyond this term and are learning how to form some 2-digit numbers. Our RE topic is “New Life” and are learning about the good news of Jesus riding from the dead at Easter. We really enjoyed using our wooden figures to retell the story in our own words. |
