Ball skills In school, we have been developing our ball skills. We have practised throwing and catching a ball, throwing bean bags into containers placed on different levels and we used tennis bats and balls. At home, can you practise throwing and catching a ball with your family? In Nursery this week we read the Christmas story. After reading the story, we used story props to retell it and dressed up as the characters. Father Alex invited us to visit English Martyrs church. We saw the nativity scene and told Father what we remembered about the Christmas story. “Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem.” (Alexis) “They knocked on the door but there was no room.” (Luca) “Jesus was born in the stable on Christmas Day.” (Axelle) Victorian day On Thursday 9th December Year 6 had a Victorian day and invited the nursery children to come and visit. The children really enjoyed seeing the Year 6 dressed up in Victorian clothes. They listened attentively to the Year 6 teacher who was also dressed up and in role. It was definitely an experience to remember. This week in Nursery we read the story Superworm by Julia Donaldson. We predicted the story, talked about it and learned some new descriptive vocabulary. We also finished making Superworm, the crow, the toad and the lizard. We then put them on our reading display. The children helped to plan our outdoor area. We made a mind map and noted children’s interests. They liked reading fairy tale stories, dressing up and mark making. This week our favourite story was Sleeping Beauty, we made a huge castle with crates and foam bricks and added princesses, dresses, horse riders, a bed and Fairy Tale characters. Look how busy and engaged we were. Mrs McInroy and the School Council launched Anti Bullying Week at assembly as the children explained this year's theme 'One Kind Word - or phrase'.
All children will be engaged in doing lots of kind acts next week and hopefully beyond. Children have been asked to wear odd socks to school on Monday to celebrate their individuality. Remembrance Day This week also we have been remembering the soldiers who died in the war. We made poppies out of tissue paper and playdough. Over the past few days we have been recalling our experiences of fireworks. We have made different fireworks using recycling materials, printed fireworks using paint and glitter and made a fantastic fireworks display. We also learnt about how to stay safe around fireworks and made fireworks safety posters. The children have learnt a lot about the topic. These are some of children’s comments.
“Stand back because it will burn your finger.” (George) “Only mummy and daddy can do the fireworks.” (Axelle) “If there is a fire call 999 and the fireman.” (Kira) “Keep the dog in the house because it will get scared.” (Alexis) “If mummy wants to touch the fireworks she needs to wear special gloves.” (Avary) “Don’t touch the fireworks. (Alec) This week we have been learning all about Diwali, the Festival of Light. We have listened to the story of ‘Rama and Sita’ and acted it out together. We made Rangoli patterns and diva lamps from salt dough and decorated them with beautiful sequins, glitter and stickers. We hung lights everywhere in the classroom and explored with different sources of light. We loved looking at the light shadows and jumping on them. |
