Illuminated by Christ, we radiate His love
At English Martyrs, we use an adapted version of the Nelson handwriting scheme. This handwriting model teaches a clear, flowing style that prepares children well for joined (cursive) writing. (Please click on the following link to see our handwriting progression document)
Benefits of this handwriting and joins model
Benefits of this handwriting and joins model
- Consistent letter shapes
- Children learn one simple, consistent form for each lowercase and capital letter, which reduces confusion and helps them focus on neatness.
- Clear ascenders (b, d, h, k, l, t) and descenders (g, j, p, q, y) make letters easy to distinguish, supporting accurate reading and spelling.
- Logical progression to joins
- The “Four Joins” are grouped into sets, so children move from single letters to joined handwriting in small, manageable steps.
- Practising joins in families (e.g. a,c,d,e,h,i,k,l,m, then m,n,s,t,u, etc.) helps children see patterns and build fluency rather than learning each join in isolation.
- Supports spelling and phonics
- Joined writing encourages children to write whole words in one smooth movement, which strengthens their awareness of spelling patterns.
- Linking letters in a word mirrors how sounds are blended in phonics, reinforcing the connection between saying, reading and writing words.
- Improves speed and stamina
- Once joins are secure, writing becomes quicker and more efficient because there are fewer times when the pencil leaves the page.
- This helps children keep up with written tasks in class and reduces fatigue in longer pieces of writing.
- Promotes legible, mature handwriting
- Letters sit on an invisible line and are evenly spaced, which makes work easier for teachers, classmates and the children themselves to read.
- A neat, joined style gives children pride in their work and sets a high standard they can carry through to secondary school.
- Builds fine motor control
- The smooth curves and straight lines in this model develop hand–eye coordination and finger strength.
- Regular practice with this style supports other classroom skills that rely on fine motor control, such as drawing, using tools and written maths.
- Easy for parents to support at home
- The model is simple and clearly presented, so parents can see exactly how each letter and join should look.
- Using the same style at home and in school gives children a consistent message and helps them avoid picking up confusing letter forms.
