Here are a few pictures from Year 1’s first trip. They looked at artifacts related space and even found the space suit Neil Armstrong wore in 1969.
The children took turns to perform in a role play activity as Neil Armstrong. The class had to ask ‘Neil Armstrong’ questions related to his trip to the moon and to end the lesson, the class drew a picture of the Apollo 11 spaceship.
We followed a set of instructions to recreate Van Gogh’s Starry Night using oil pastels. First, we drew around our hand to recreate the shape of a tree in the night. Then we looked closely at the painting and noticed that he had used lines to make his sky, wind and stars. We then used lines to recreate our own version. We looked again at the painting and discussed the houses. We talked about the shape and how big they were in comparison to the rest of the painting. Then the children learned the word ‘ vertical’ and drew green vertical lines to represent the grass and fields in Van Gogh’s picture. In today’s lesson, to see that Van Gogh had no white spaces. We decided as a class that we could use water paint to cover those areas. We washed over our art work with coloured water paint. In our science lesson today, Year 1 were experimenting with absorbent and non-absorbent materials. The children had to submerge a material into the water and check if the material soaks up the water or it repels and slide of the material. Mrs McInroy and the School Council launched Anti Bullying Week at assembly as the children explained this year's theme 'One Kind Word - or phrase'.
All children will be engaged in doing lots of kind acts next week and hopefully beyond. Children have been asked to wear odd socks to school on Monday to celebrate their individuality. In one of our geography lessons this week, the children went on a field walk around our school. We looked at our school’s local area and discussed the features we could see and hear around us. The children had to answer the following questions and later draw a picture of what they saw. Is our school’s local area very noisy? Are there any fields near our school? Are there lots of buildings near our school? What are the roads like near our school? As our Maths starter today, Year 1 were following instructions to ordinate coloured multilink cubes. To begin the lesson they chose the coloured link after each instruction, as we moved further into the lesson, the children were able to make the structures using muscle memory. During choosing time, some of the children worked collaboratively to make a palace using Jumbo Jenga blocks.
In Religious Education, Year 1 are learning all about the story of creation. In our class learning, the children were able to retell the first creation story through illustrations and sentence writing.
